Meet Stina Olofsson, UX Designer and Outdoor Enthusiast

How did you become interested in tech?

When I was young, I was always interested in creating things but had no interest in tech. In fact, I didn’t know what I wanted to work with, I just knew it wasn’t tech. After studying architecture for a year, I changed direction, as I felt something was missing from the education. I wanted to know how things are actually built, not just designing the look and feel.

So, I decided to transfer and begin an MSc in Interactive Technology and Design. My brother had completed the program and described it as a great combination of understanding how things are built, solving complex problems, and exploring the intersection of psychology and design – it sounded ideal.

How long have you been working with tech?

After graduating in 2018, I worked as a consultant in Stockholm with UX design for companies including SAS, Zettle by PayPal, and Cabonline.

At SAS, I focused on improving the customer experience from the moment a trip is booked until check-in. At Zettle, I worked on enhancing the experience for sellers, particularly around how they engaged with their customers. At Cabonline, I explored both sides of the experience, making it easier for customers to book a taxi and improving the app interface for drivers.

Two years ago, I moved to Skellefteå with my family and started at Ductus.

What does a typical day at work involve?

I’d say the typical thing about my days is that there isn’t a typical day. However, we do always start with a stand-up meeting where we plan together with the project team. Then what happens during the rest of the day will depend on what stage of a project we’re in.

It can be anything from research, design or workshops with a team involving Ductus developers, subcontractors and clients. No matter the tasks, each day is centered around solving problems and creating better user experiences.

What’s most interesting about your job?

It’s the variation, whether that’s the work that I’m doing or the client that I’m doing it for. Since joining Ductus I’ve worked with everything from mining to media companies and a lot in between. They have very different requirements but applying design thinking to this can deliver valuable and implementable results.

What advice would you give to somebody interested in pursuing a career like yours?

Don’t be afraid to embrace it. I wasn’t techy at all and sort of fell into it by accident, but I love working in this field. It’s so broad and there is so much opportunity. Don’t be put off by the word tech, there is every chance you will find your niche and excel at it.

Tech is really about problem solving, and it’s everywhere today. You don’t have to be technical, just curious and motivated to help create better solutions for people.

Finally, what do you do when you’re not working?

I recently returned to the office from parental leave, so when I get home, there’s plenty to do with my young children. And, living in Skellefteå there is so much to do in the great outdoors, so we spend a lot of time outside, skiing, biking, and other activities.
