In today\u2019s market, customers expect near-zero downtime. Their businesses depend on it. Even slight service degradation can violate SLAs and result in churn. Ongoing issues? That can mean loss of business altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To meet these expectations, CSPs must ensure not only a healthy infrastructure but also a reliable mechanism for monitoring service quality across that infrastructure. This is where assurance becomes essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re responsible for reducing manual effort, improving customer satisfaction, and enabling automation, assurance is not just helpful \u2014 it\u2019s foundational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer is-style-responsive-medium\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-ductus-lightgray-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-ductus-lightgray-background-color has-background\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer is-style-responsive-small\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-ductus-darkblue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-4763fe49d34a0af22c368f4a5f27177e\" id=\"h-what-is-assurance-and-why-it-matters\">What Is Assurance, and Why It Matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To consistently deliver high-quality services, CSPs need to address two dimensions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Network Assurance<\/strong> \u2013 Ensures the infrastructure is performing optimally, securely, and reliably.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Service Assurance<\/strong> \u2013 Ensures that services running on top of the infrastructure meet customer expectations for quality and availability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These two domains are tightly interlinked and <strong>critical enablers<\/strong> of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Real-time visibility and control<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Predictive fault management<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Closed-loop automation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Network and Service Assurance is an important component in the transition towards Autonomous Networks, which many CSPs are currently focusing on (see our insight <a href=\"https:\/\/ductus.global\/autonomous-networks-challenges-and-practical-steps-for-communication-service-providers\/\">&#8221;Autonomous Network: Challenges and Practical Steps for Communication Service Providers&#8221;<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmforum.org\/\">TM Forum<\/a> asked CSPs which areas they prioritize in their Autonomous Network initiatives, fault management and service assurance ranked highest. This reflects a clear industry shift: assurance is not optional\u2014it\u2019s mission-critical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer is-style-responsive-medium\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-ductus-lightgray-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-ductus-lightgray-background-color has-background\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer is-style-responsive-small\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-ductus-darkblue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f7b13d3ec999bedc50325c86b01685cd\" id=\"h-building-assurance-that-supports-automation\">Building Assurance that Supports Automation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The foundation for both Network and Service Assurance is <strong>telemetry<\/strong>. There are many types of data to collect:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Configuration data<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Device status<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Events and logs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Traffic and routing data<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>External factors such as weather forecasts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditionally, data collection relied on SNMP polling, CLI, and syslog. But these methods are limited in speed and scope. Today, <strong>streaming telemetry<\/strong> is the preferred approach:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Push-based and near real-time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Model-driven to target relevant information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scalable and adaptable across environments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, it\u2019s not just about collecting more data. As Carl Andersson writes in <em>Creating a Data-Driven Organization<\/em>, data must be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Relevant<\/strong> to the questions you need answers to<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Accurate<\/strong> and <em>Complete<\/em> dataset representing the true state of an entity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Coherent<\/strong> by having identities allowing them to be combined\/joined with other data<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Accessible and timely<\/strong>, therefore needs to be easy to access for a machine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Consistent and defined<\/strong>, requires the same data definitions across all data with unambiguous meaning of the data<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words\u2014only high quality telemetry enables effective automation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer is-style-responsive-medium\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-ductus-lightgray-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-ductus-lightgray-background-color has-background\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer is-style-responsive-small\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-ductus-darkblue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-762ac4440b82755105c4d0877b668cd6\" id=\"h-active-and-passive-assurance-better-together\">Active and Passive Assurance: Better Together<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For service reliability and SLA compliance, both active and passive assurance are essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Active Assurance<\/strong> simulates user behavior by injecting test traffic. It\u2019s ideal for verifying service quality proactively\u2014especially before going live.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Passive Assurance<\/strong> monitors real user traffic with no added load. These functions must work together to deliver a unified view of performance and reliability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For assurance to be truly effective, it must be present from the start.
